Abstract
In contrast to an existing tendency, the teaching
procedures related to the block of numbers 1--20 are considered with nicety of
detail. Interdependence of addition and subtraction is treated with a
differentiation of syntactic matters from those semantic. A comparison of
matching and counting is also included in order to show why matching alone
would not lead to the building of the system of natural numbers.
